The Dataset

The Palmer Penguins dataset contains measurements for 342 penguins from three species collected at three islands in the Palmer Archipelago, Antarctica.

Chinstrap

Named for the thin black line running under their chin. Found exclusively on Dream Island.

  • Islands: Dream

Gentoo

The largest of the three species, with distinctive orange bills. Found primarily on Biscoe Island.

  • Count: 123
  • Islands: Biscoe

Adelie

The most widespread species, found on all three islands. Characterized by shorter bills and moderate body mass.

  • Islands: Biscoe, Dream, Torgersen

Measurements

The dataset includes four key body measurements:

Bill Depth (mm) Depth of the penguin’s bill
Flipper Length (mm) Length of the penguin’s flipper
Body Mass (g) Weight of the penguin

Data Source

Data were collected by Dr. Kristen Gorman at Palmer Station, Antarctica, and made available through the palmerpenguins R package by Allison Horst.
