Before you get started with this course, you’ll need to install R and RStudio. You might also want to try out one of the “cloud” versions of RStudio listed below.

Install R and RStudio

We will always work in RStudio, so be careful to open RStudio and not the default R application that comes with R:

RStudio in the cloud!

If you’re having trouble installing R or RStudio, don’t worry - you can quickly launch a virtual version of RStudio in your webbrowser! Here are two ways to do that:

  1. Go to https://rstudio.cloud/ and sign up for a free account.
  2. If you are a GWU student, you can access a local RStudio cloud session by clicking on the logo in the menu bar and logging in with your GWU web ID and password.

Note: You must be on the GW network for option 2 to work. If you’re off campus, you can get on the network remotely using a VPN. You can do that by installing the “Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client” software and logging in to GW’s VPN:
